New dancehall riddim selection from the Rootdown camp, the label which traditionally supports German artists.
Coming Riddim / Rootdown Records / 2003
It's already two years ago since engineer Teka from Rootdown Rec. hit out his first selection on his Racer riddim, which got famous as the first riddim selection to be voiced completely in German. Now, in 2003, after producing several EPs for various Rootdown artists, he is coming back with another selection, the Coming Riddim. It features 6 tunes on 3 singles and is already available at Soundquake.
Production-wise it's a solid thing again. Teka builds a jumpy, fast-paced instrumental based on piano stabs and bouncing drums. The riddim is faster than most riddims nowadays and somehow swims against the current with it's straight-forward base-base-snare structure, while Jamaican producers get lost in more and more twisted drum patterns.
Artist-wise, the selection features the whole Rootdown camp, started with singjay Nattyflo, who hails his label home with 'Rootdown'. Shocking Murray delivers the only Patois tune with 'Secret Admirer', a quite mediocre one, at least I would have expected something more spectacular from the veteran of the German soundsystem scene. Upcoming singjay Nosliw is present with 'Spart Euch Die Kraft', a tune that already been around as a teaser for this selection on his already reviewed EP. A good 'battle'-tune, lyricwise in hip hop tradition, but performed with a blast of dancehall energy. Deejay Nikitaman delivers a counteraction to Nosliw with 'Der König Ist Tot', on the one hand a tune against monarchy, on the otherhand a reconsideration of Nosliw's 'dancehall king' claim he's uttering in 'Spart Euch...'The whole fuss gets its reaction in 'Wer?!?', the tune by female singjay Mono. Good tune, reminds me a bit on Cecile, though not as melodic, but perhaps because of Mono's Austrian descent, the text is sometimes hard to understand even for a German person. And, last but not least, we have a newcomer named Maxim here, with a tune called 'Energie'. He sounds a bit like Nattyflo, but individual and fresh enough to look forward to hear more from him... Big up Rootdown !
