Jah Road Riddim / Stone Rock Prod. / 2003
Stonerock productions from Stuttgart/Berlin just unleashed their second production: The Jah Road Riddim, a wonderful nu-roots Riddim, which had to match my inflated expectations because their first effort (Babapeng) had been so outstanding. Luckily, Jah Road was up to the task and, for me, met the high standard set for German roots productionsby labels like Ire Hifi, I-Spect (Elemental Riddim), and Germaican (Doctor's Darling).
The most ear-catching aspect of Jah Road is the powerful horn set atthe start of the Riddim. As a horn player myself, I especially liked that Stonerock didn't use cheap samples and a keyboard to program the horns, but recorded real instruments. The nice bass line combined with a variety of guitar off-beats and diverse percussion sets make the Riddima truly fresh and cutting-edge nu-roots Riddim.
Voiced by German newcomers (Uncle Tom, Dandy Lion & BAX), the veteran DJ Dr. Ring-Ding and the Germany-based yard singers Shocking Murray (Portland, Jamaica/Dortmund) and Anthony Locks (Jamaica / SouthernGermany), the tunes have enough variety to let everybody find their own favorite tune.
For me the absolute winner on the Riddim is Shocking Murray. His deep voice set off by a beautiful background choir is the perfect complement to the subject that Shocking Murray reflects on in his tune, the endingof a love affair.
Another strong effort is given by Anthony Locks. His hook line The whole world is in a confusion, many people don't unite no more is really endearing. Compare Anthony Locks to Luciano. I can see him mature in the future to a similar level, both lyrics- and voice-wise.
The Heidelberg-based Uncle Tom delivers another nice tune. The titletrack for the Riddim attacks Babylon with a conscious message. Loaded with righteousness, he asks the listeners to trod with him Jah's narrow road.
The English-German combination of the Stonerock artists Dandy Lion & BAX contemplates on the relations between church and religion. But if you disregard the cliché-packed lyrics of the tune, you will find that the Riddim variation in Bax' rap segment and the use of alternating languages makes this tune another highlight of the selection.
I'm not a big Ring Ding Fan. That said, I must admit that the only tune that doesn't convince me is his combination with Papa Jason. But if you like his other tunes, you'll maybe like this one as well.
