Budadub Sound - Roots and Culture Vol.1
Summer is coming. Time to hang out in the sun, do a bbq, cruise with open car windows, go to the beach... Without coming up with the old summer reggae cliché, one can surely state that a good mixtape is essential especially for this time of the year. So, in the last months promo mixtapes from several soundsystems just kept flowing into the Cla.at HQ, and the most recent one is coming from Budadub Soundsystem from Munich, Germany. This heavyweight sound, founded in 1996, is known for their unusual foundation dubplates (like the great Bongo Herman they played at Kill Or Be Killed 2001), and I was really looking forward for that tape, entitled Roots & Culture 01.

...and I surely wasn't disappointed. This mixtape features such an amount of roots&culture dubplates as I've rarely heard on a German mixtape. All dubplates are of good quality, and it's obvious that the Budadub guys put much efford in getting really proper voiced tunes and no standart stuff. Most of the plates feature really intelligent lyric modifications and not just the standart 2-3 soundname big-ups in a tune. A nice thing is also the choice of the tunes turned into dubplates. Many soundmen, lacking tune knowledge and imagination, just pick the recent or all-time top hit of an artist and let him voice it, but on this tape you hear some exclusives from tunes not that known, but still big. Of course, some obligatory hype tunes like Warior King's Virtuous Woman are still on there, but it's one of the best-voiced Warrior King dubs I've heard till now.

When it comes to featured artists' dubplates, the spectre is very wide, going from veterans like the Abyssinians, Junior Reid and Everton Blender to the nu-roots generation of Luciano, Capleton or Warrior King. Just check the tracklist above to convince yourself that Budadub drops a heavy load of specials pon this tape. There are also quite some regular 45s featured as well, going from all-time big tunes like Tenor Saw's Golden Hen to rediscoveries like Junior Reid's Shak A Lack or Norma Frazer's First Cut. The tune choice, dubplate- as well as 45-wise is all in all very lucky, the Junior Reid and Abyssinians dubs being my personal favourites.

Besides the overwhelming conscious vibes, the tape seems to carry a second message. 'We are ready for soundwar, come on and challenge us!', the load of foundation specials seem to implicate. At one of the first big German soundclash, Kill Or Be Killed 2001, Budadub already showed their ability to play big inna soundwar, missing the finals only through a controversial decision. Now they seem to have filled up their foundation stock even more, and one can only hope that they'll show their power in a clash in the next future.

The tape is mastered and recorded very well and comes in a solid sleeve and on a printed cassette. Get it at the Budadub Website or at www.dancehall-tapes.de.
