VA - The Excitement / Germaican Records / 2002

Germaican Records, the pioneers of reggae made in Germany, are presenting a collection of their best tunes as well as some unreleased material...

The Germany-based record label Germaican, which might be known to many of you through jamaican airplay of their famous riddim called Bitch back in 2001, has finally brought a CD/LP compilation of their best 7" releases to the public. It features a brilliant line-up that even some jamaican labels might dream of: Sizzla, Elephant Man, Hawkeye, Lady Saw, Jack-A-Diamond, Degree, Lexxus and Mr.Vegas represent the jamaican dancehall elite on two riddims, the famous Bitch and it's 2002 sequel, the Geisha. And this top-a-top jamaican artists didn't give producer Pionear just some lyrical left-overs - all the tunes are highly original. The most outstanding one is for sure The Excitement from highly controversial bobo dread Sizzla - what a surprise that in this tune, he not a single time mentions neither "pum pum" nor "b#*@yman", it's just a excitement/education ting like we were used from him back in the days. This tune comes on the heavy stepping Geisha riddim, aswell as Jack-A-Diamond's and Spectacular's riddim-naming tune. When it comes to the Bitch tunes, you might know most of them, they are all pretty good, the most outstanding one is in my opinion Blaze The Chalice by Mr.Vegas, which might be one of the best tunes Vegas did perform since "Heads High". Some of the original Bitch tunes are presented on this compilation on a hiphop beat called Bitch Remix, which is not THE absolute bashment mover in my opinion, but still a nice thing to hear.

Coming to the german tune on this one, there are two riddims completely voiced by Germany-based artists: Arena from 2000 and World Report from 2001. Some tunes are held in jamaican patois, like Di Bone from Cologne-based Ganjan, but the most ones are voiced in german. Even though you might not understand these, you should give it a try - you'll see that Germany has not only great patois-performing artists like Gentleman, but also quite a lot of good ones who perform in their mother tongue. My picks for the non-german listeners would be Vom Vatter ("From the Father") by Dr.Ring-Ding (who is also widely known as ska musician with his band The Senior Allstars) and Kreuz Und Quer by the german conscious deejay Nattyflo.

I just can encourage the non-german audience to order this compilation to promote this excellent piece of Germany-produced dancehall worldwide. Big up Germaican Records ! Don't forget to check the sound snipplets below...

Ich denke mal, über die jamaikanischen Tunes ist oben schon alles gesagt worden... Nun ist der deutsche Part auf dieser Compilation natürlich genaus wichtig, denn der Gemany-Jamaica Linkup Gedanke steht bei Germaican natürlich ganz weit vorne. Auf der Compilation ist zunächst natürlich der Arena Riddim präsent, ein Meilenstein im deutschen 7" Bizz, und die wichtigesten Tunes darauf gibts auf der Compilation nochmal zum nachhören. Allesamt hörenswert, vor allem für Leute, die mit dem deutschen Dancehall noch nicht so lange vertraut sind, ein Muß.

Naja, dann gibt es noch den World Report... Wir wissen ja leider alle daß dieser Riddim nie richtig gut angelaufen ist, trotz der sehr guten Produktion und viel Promotion, einfach nur aus dem Grund, daß die meisten (allesamt deutschsprachigen)Tunes vom Voicing her nicht gerade dem Qualitätsstandart entsprachen. Hier hat Germaican sich aber Mühe gegeben, die besseren World Report Cuts auf die Compilation zu packen, so daß man beim Durchhören ein viel positiveres Bild von dem Riddim hat als bei der 7" Selection. Bemerkenswert hier vor allem Wir Singen Für Geld von Manu Rankin und Dr.Ring-Ding, ein Tune, um den viel spekuliert wurde und der meines Wissens nach nie auf 7" released wurde.

Der Geisha ist hier ebenfalls mit zwei deutschsprachigen Tunes vertreten, und die sind von der Qualität her unterschiedlich wie Tag und Nacht... Vom Vatter von Dr.Ring-Ding überzeugt in aller Hinsicht. Das Intro vom Java (ohnehin mein Lieblings-Roots-Riddim aller Zeiten), die Conscious Lyrics, die nicht auf Rasta bezogen sind und trotzdem, oder vielleicht gerade deswegen, jedem ins Herz gehen, die Art, wie Ring-Ding im Ward-21 Manier ein erstes Thema mit kleinen Sound-Gimmicks aufmischen kann... Dazu der treibende Geisha, der in Deutschland leider viel weniger Soundsystem Rotation hatte als er es verdient hätte - all das macht Vom Vatter zum vielleicht besten deutschsprachigen Dancehall Tune der letzten paar Jahre. Alles andere ist Weedy Wee vom Wortsteppah - hässliche Stimme, nichtssagender Text, auf Dancehall transferrierte Hiphop-Attitüden, sorry, da kann der sehr sehr gute Riddim auch nicht viel retten. Vielleicht der einzige schwer negative Bruchteil der Compilation. Was mir aber auch ein Rätsel ist, ist warum Backyard Crew jetzt meinen, jeden Tune auf Deutsch voicen zu wollen... Ihr Supertrend ist zwar nicht wirklich schlecht, aber schon bei Blues Steel Pt.2 auf der ersten Riddim-Mag CD hatte ich das Gefühl, daß die Jungs viel gediegener auf Patois als auf Deutsch rüberkommen. Naja, aber genug Gemecker, ansonsten ist die Compilation wirklich top, und gerade die Leute die es versäumt haben sich rechtzeitig die 7"'s zuzulegen, sollten sich die Scheibe besorgen.
