The Boss Riddim / O$$bo$$ Prod. / 2002
Here we go with a riddim selection from Vienna, Austria, layed by the upcoming producer O$$$. The first round, consisting of three 7"s, feature a multinational line-up, coming up with two Jamaicans, two Austrians and one German. As far as I am informed, this is the first riddim selection to be produced in Austria, so I guess we might expect more from this country's growing scene in the future.

What is to say about the riddim itself ? Classical bass-bass-snare structure, but with snares played in different tones and a kind of scratching sub-percussion sound reminding me of 2000's Heart Attack riddim. All in all a set of drum patterns that carry you forward, combined with echoed strings and some other synths fitting quite well. Nothing groundbreaking, you could place it somewhere between ther mentioned Heart Attack and the Racer riddim from Germany's T.e.k.a, but of course I'm far from calling it a carbon copy, because though the drumpatterns seem kinda dejavue'ish, the synths put them into an original context.

Let's come to the single tunes... The headliner of this set is for sure Sean Paul, who delivers a hot girl-tune and brings his Dutty Cup Crew mate Loogaman with him. Loogaman comes up with, guess what, a girl-tune, which did surprise me in a positive way, as I always rated him as a 3rd-class-artist before and now hear that he has much talent for sure. Except for this pop-styled hookline in the refrain, his deejay skills are much better than many people thought before, and with this tune he shows it very well.
Besides this two well-known Jamaicans, the selection features some European artists. n the b-side of Sean Paul's tune, you can find a female singer named I-An, who, according to the promo info, is more into r'n'b singing, and this fact you can hear in the tune. Sure she sings good, and the tune is tight, but it could be released on an r'n'b beat as well as on a dancehall riddim. Perhaps she'll get more into the "dancehall ting" and we'll hear her singing more dancehall-style, time will tell. About the next b-side, I am really sorry to say that the upcoming and strongly promoted Austrian artist Camel does not impress me enough. Perhaps it's just because of his unusual Patois-pronounciation, I don't know... He surely has a great voice, but his whole flow seems kinda misplaced. Anyway I shouldn't judge so hard as this is the only tune i heard from him so far. On the third 7" finally, you hear someone whom you might know well - the mighty Tolga, a turkish-german singjay who can be called one of the initiators of the dancehall movement in Germany, voicing "Heat Of The Night" with Gentleman and Richie Stephens back in 1999. What to say about this tune ? It's typical Tolga crooning style, some might hate it, some might love it, and I have to say I like it quite well. The lyrics, as far as I recognize, are dealing with his breakup with Germaican Records, about which I'm not going to say anything because I simply don't know the facts except the fact that Tolga goes his own way since a certain time.

A good thing to mention is that this three 7"s are pressed in Jamaica on really thick vinyl and get distributed by Tuff Gong worldwide, so be sure to lay your hands on them.

All in all, it's a solid riddim selection, though not all artists convince totally. Nice to see Austria is able to run tings, and the selectors worldwide should consider getting this one to have something special on the wheels of steel.
