Small Axe - Reggae & Dancehall Bombs 2k2

"Dancehall Bombs" is Small Axe calling new mix and they´re truly about to keep that promise as Killaswitch found out taking a deep rehearsal..
Small Axe, the crucial soundsystem from Aachen/Germany, came up with a heavy mixtape recently. Reggae & Dancehall Bombs 2k2 is the motto here, and though the title isn't to be taken literally (Tenor Saw Lots Of Signs is surely no 2k2 bomb), the tape represents lots of stuff that was hot in 2k2 and is still hot today.

Side A starts with two anti-war tunes, reflecting the present situation, of which the second is a wicked cover of Marley's War by Candyman, in a dubplate special. What follows then, is a large segment of 2k2 tunes from Germany, lots of them inna dubplate style, most of then put on Germaica's big 2k2 Doctor's Darling riddim. Great segment to see who's big in the German dancehall/reggae scene. The rest of the A-Side is stuffed with lots of dancehall goodies from last year, featuring many big riddims, a dubplate here and there.

Side B starts with a r'n'b segment, featuring refixes as well as original r'n'b tunes. Not my taste, but there are nuff r'n'b lovers out there. After some other dancehall tunes, among those some of Pow Pow's Celebrate selection, we come into the roots sector. Classical cuts like Tenor Saw's Lots Of Signs or Glen Washington's Jah Glory (inna dubplate style) are played here amongst nu-roots smashers. Small Axe fling many dubplates here, amongst those big artists like Johnny Osbourne, Colonel Lloyd and new talent VC.

All in all the tape not only gives you a great overview what happened musically in Germany's and Jamaica's 2k2 reggae scene, but serves you with great classics. The big amount of dubplates dropped on this tape is quite unusual for a German mixtape and adds a certain extra spice to the whole listening experience. The mix is not always fluent, but it doesn't hurt the whole concept of the tape. Great walkman food !
